During the summer of 1858 everyone, who was anyone, flocked to Saratoga Springs all sharing one primary objective to "See and be Seen." For the preceding decade America's bankers, plantation owners, industrialists, religious leaders, politicians, and social reformers had descended on the village each season. The foremost stayed at the States Hotel. Like magnets, those of distinction attracted dowagers, con-men, gamblers, and "pretenders.”
Despite wearing a mask of propriety, Saratoga Springs had more than its share of crime, intrigue, romance and illicit relationships. The season of 1858 did nothing to dispel this image.
One needs to remember that then, as now, Saratoga was the place to “See and be Seen."
